My Anodising Spread Sheet. click DOWNLOAD > Last UPDATED July 7th 2020 Allows the input of a parts dimensions that result in a calculation of it's total surface aria along with the appropriate Current Amps needed to be set as well as the recommended anodising time. Updated Version 2.8 (It adds seperate quantity value inputs for each line calculation for Aria of a Square and Block or Cube)
This is part 1 of 2 Explaining how I anodise machined aluminium items. In this I explain how I clean, prepare anodise and seal some aluminium parts providing a natural finish.
This is part 2 of how I anodise aluminium machined items. This part is specific to colour dying the aluminium immediately following the actual anodising process.
Part 3 is additional explaining how to use the Anodising Spread Sheet that I created. This spread sheet I use to easily calculate the surface aria of a part that results in providing the appropriate current setting and the anodising time.
UPDATE October 14, 2021
I was recently asked about the mixing ratios of the chemicals I use for Anodizing, the following was my answer:
The main chemical is the anodising bath and that is 25% Sulphuric acid x volume of filters water. My Anodising Bath is around 20Ltrs so its 15Ltrs of Water and 5 Ltrs of Acid. (the Sulphuric Acid is 99% pure) Just be sure to put 15Lts of water into the container and then gradually over 3-4 hours add the acid. A lot of heat is generated during the mixing process so the mix needs time to cool before each time you add some acid. Wear eye protection, long rubber gloves and old cloths. I took most of a day to mix mine about 250mL of acid at a time. I sat the plastic anodising acid bath in the laundry sink that had cold water in it to help cool the acid. I have been using my anodising bath for over 5 years now and it still works as new. I just make sure every aluminium part I anodise is really clean and rinsed in filters water before putting it in the bath. I don’t anodise a great amount just every 2-3 weeks. I have only topped the bath up a couple of times with a little water and acid mix.
The Caustic Soda that is not an exact measure. Its just Caustic Soda powderI get from the supermarket and I mix it with water to get a nice reaction with the Aluminium. Just a slight fizzing on the aluminium surface. I start with a container for example 3Ltr and 2 Table Spoons of Caustic powder. Adding more if i think its needed.
Sometimes I de-Smut the aluminium if I think it needs it but not often. This is a 5% each of Nitric and Hydrochloric acid. These days as I am anodising almost immediately after mating the part de-smutting is not needed.
The degreaser is mixed to the makers recommendation as well as the Anodising dye/colouring solutions. I simply follow all their recommendations. I use Caswell products. https://caswellplating.com/
All the other cleaning is just plain tap or filtered water.
